Ferry from Culebra to Vieques

Hi there - I'm going to be visiting Vieques in September and wanted to also venture out to Culebra for a day or two. Is there a ferry between the two islands that doesn't involve going back to Fajardo?

I saw another post here that referenced Island Hi-Speed Ferry, but they seem to have stopped service in PR. Is that correct?

Is our only option a flight? Any idea which airlines provide service?

Hi Erik,
Sorry, but the only way is to have enough people to split the cost of a short charter flight. Isla Culebra or Air Flameco will do this but you will have to fill the plane (8 to 10 people) or pay for the full plane ($200-$300).
Culebra-Fajardo-Vieques on the ferry is the cheap way, but will take most of a day out of your vacation.
You could try to get one of the boat charter operators to drop you on Vieques. Let me know if you are successful. This question seems to come up with some frequency, so there's an opportunity there for somebody.

Thanks for the info. That is really a drag. I was really hoping to hop over to Culebra to see Playa Flamenco, Dewey, Culebrita, etc. Will need to reevaluate plans.

Good morning,
Flamenco & Vieques airlink do run flights between the islands (not only charters). They normally require a min. of 4 people to put the flight on.

I called Air Flamenco and confirmed that they will fly between the two islands for $25 pp one way.

Is it feasible to do a day trip from Vieques to Culebrita? Fly over in the morning, hop on a boat and head out to Culebrita for the day, boat back and fly back to Vieques?

I think it would be easier to get into North Korea than the itinerary you propose. But you can try calling for the flight times and Willy is a boat taxi option. Good luck.

Geronimo, what is the difficulty? Assuming we can get the flights to work (which is a challenge, i understand), isn't the boat to Culebrita an on-demand sort of thing? How long does it take to get to Culebrita from Culebra?

You can get the flights in the morning and then as late in the day you can for the return. The flight is usually on demand time too. Try calling Willy or the dive shop to see what time thay can water taxi you to and from Culebrita. From town to Culebrita I would estimate a 30 minute boat ride. So it is definately doable. And worth the trip to Culebrita. I didn't mean to pour cold water on your journey plans. You will have a blast and be happy that you experienced it.

You can take a water taxi from Culebra to get to Culebrita. ($40 pp) It is WELL worth the time and money. The water taxi operator will drop you off then come back and pick you up later at a time you agree upon. Terry

Flying to Culebra just to go to Culebrita for a couple of hours
and then fly back the same day seems like a lot of time and
money for so little return.

Slow down and just enjoy Vieques and save Culebra for another
trip or plan to spend a couple of days on Culebra at least. Culebra
deserves more than a drop in visit IMO.


Rushing here and there is so 'un island'. Chill...

Erik, we went from Culebra to Vieques last year per plane. I looked up my trip report and this is the section related to this flight. Hope it helps.

I had stopped by the airport early in the week and spoke the folks at AF about our flight to Vieques on the 26th. I was told to get to the airport by 10 and they would put us on the 11 flight to Fajardo and would just stop in Vieques and drop us off, enroute. We returned our jeep to Jerry, after first dropping our luggage off across the street at the airport. However, AF acted like they did not know what I was talking about. I spent almost an hour at the desk and finally was able to get on the 11 o'clock flight.

This was with Air Flamenco and was a very short flight indeed.

We actually didn't make it to Culebra. We decided to stay for the duration on Vieques. I called the airlines and one of them (can't remember which) said it would be possible to fly over for the day with our party of 6. It turned out to just be too difficult to coordinate all 6 of us. Turned out there was plennnnnty to do on Vieques!
