Bike and Lock?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

hi all--i'm coming the end of the first week of JUly, and I've had many helpful posts from many of you. I already heard (Thanks Terrie) that as an avid runner/marathoner I can probably run around the island and walk where I need to go. I also bike, and know that at night it can be dangerous as it's dark. However, I'm wondering about locking a bike at the campgrounds there. I am camping at least one night, and am then probably booking a room (finalizing all of this this week). Would my bike be safe locked up or would I be in danger of someone trying to piece it out and or cut the lock?

Beth, if you want to be absolutely sure and you bring your 5K bicycle and you want to leave it in the midst of a teenage group - get insurance ;)

Generally speaking though, bikes are safe - without lock. On the other hand, if your bike is really expensive and seen by someone who can tell, is not from the island and leaves with the next ferry - opportunities make thieves ...

Whenever I get a new bike (and I ride wherever I go) first thing I do, I mess up the paint job royally - I know, it hurts - and make sure only to clean the running parts. My bikes look like crap and the locks generally look better than the bike. That insures against crack addicts selling it for $20 or the teenager wanting to take it for a ride. You will not find the pro with a good set of tools who is looking for that ti/carbon mix frame in Culebra!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

I'd also point out the dangers of traffic and poor road conditions. The pot holes and large rocks on the roads make biking really dangerous. Drivers also have little regard to bikers there.

I am also an avid runner but there are no sidewalks and sense of a shoulder to roads on Culebra. Just be careful.

I would go bikeless the first day and utilize the publicos. Then for the rest, rent a scooter or other transportation for days you go to Punta Soldado or Zoni Beach.

As someone who's ridden on Culebra a bunch, it's really not that bad if you just take a whole lane when you need to and be cautious of drivers and potholes.

I think you'll be finest kind, locking your bike with whatever you have, to the posts at the outside edge of the campground. i lock up my bike with a pretend-lock system, and no one has ever touched it. As long as you're aware of upcoming traffic, i don't think you should feel particularly endangered on your bike. Where in the world can you feel 100% Ok about traffic coming up behind you, after all? Wear a helmet and be savvy...and enjoy the scenery!!
