Visiting in August
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello All,

I am visiting Culebra for the first time in August of 2010. I am excited to
visit a place that is not commercialized and that is rich in beautiful
beaches.

I am staying in a rental house and would love some information on fun activities, good places to eat (especially seafood), and general tips on making the best of my time on the island. I should mention I am travelling with my husband and 17 year old daughter and 12 year old son.

Thanks, in advance, for your suggestions.

All the best,
Ivette from NJ

We recently returned from our second trip, and typically what we'd do is the hardier souls (My husband and our friend who came with us this time) would get up early and go snorkeling at the closest beach. By the time they came back my daughter and I would have biked or walked into town and gotten bread and pastries from Pandeli. Then we'd go out to snorkel/swim/lay on the beach later as a group. If you want to hike a little Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo are a 20-minute hike from Flamenco, and the snorkeling is great. One night we stayed and watched the sunset at Carlos Rosario, and hiked back using a headlamp and flashlights. If you are up for a more strenous hike Resaca is isolated and beautiful. We had it all to ourselves all day -- don't bother hauling your snorkeling gear down that hill and back up, though. Travel light, because it is steep coming back up. Still didn't make it to Brava -- maybe next trip!

We had good seafood at both Dinghy Dock and Susie's. We ate in about half the time. The food at the kiosks at Flamenco was good and cheap.

You can drive to Flamenco and Zoni (sort of, big pot holes near entrance) beaches. Rasaca is quite a HIKE. Brava beach is easier to hike to. Turn at the 1905 museum, go to end of pavement, park, and hike the dirt road/path over the hill to the beach. Chances are you will be the only one there also. Hike to the West end to see cool rock and lava formations. You can swim to the little island there also. And if you have time, plan a day trip to Culebrita. It's awsome. Enjoy.

I will be on the island from 8/13-8/20. Thank you for the great suggestions. Sounds like a lot of exercise. I better start getting shape for all the hiking it sounds like I'll be doing.

Best,
Ivette

The best thing to do in Culebra is nothing....take time to bond with kids...have nice walks ....perhaps you can rent a golf cart at Charlies...they are fun and light and can go most everywhere in it....

I would'n bring computers or TV or nothing that would take family away from me....have them re learn how to talk with parents ....take an evening stroll to do star gazing....some nights the stars are amazing....enjoy your time away from it all...

best place to eat....El Batey....yummmmmmmy!! and do not leave the island without trying the AREPAS....or the fried Jonny Cakes (if you can find them)

My Heart is in Culebra too
