Mosquitoes in Puerto Rico?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi: we are planning a trip to Culebra in June. Is that a time where mosquitoes are reasonable or are they at their worst?
Thanks

Mosquitos don't care about the time of year. They are all about rain and dry times (now no-see-ums, that's different). Just assume there will be mosquitos and prepare accordingly - if they aren't here, yippie!

Thanks. But how many, between mosquitoes and no-see-ums? Just a few here and there, or entire clouds of them assaulting you wherever you go? I have had a really bad experience with mosquitoes in Antigua. Those bugs were not deterred by any time of repellent and ruined my whole vacation. I would prefer not to repeat that experience in Culebra.

We have only been to Culebra in Feb. and March and no real problems with mosquitos. Deet worked just fine. No problem during the day at the beach or even walking in town. We even hiked to Carlos Rosario and didn't have any bug problems. There are some red ants at Tamarindo and they do bite if you are not careful.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

We were in Culebra during July and YES there were many of them. No seeums at the old pier where you snorkel at Playa Flamenco and it was only 3PM. During our 20 minute hike to Carlos Rosario we got bit by mosquitoes. While we were waiting for the publico at the entrance of Playa Flamenco at 6PM we got eaten by mosquitoes. We even brought back a little stowaway, a tick which could have hopped on board anywhere. Definitely take some bug repellent, products with citronella or other natural repellent oils, anything you think that will make your trip comfortable without the bug bites. Happy travels! J

We were there in January and encountered a few mosquitoes but not too bad. We were warned that the mosquitoes would be really bad so we brought all kinds of bug repellent but honestly never even opened them. We used a citronella candle when sitting out on the porch at night and that seemed to work fine. Don't know if we were lucky or maybe we were in such a state of extreme relaxation that we were oblivious to the insects dining on us :)

So, from all these messages it looks like maybe mosquitoes are worst in the summer months than in the winter.
Thanks everybody for your help.

Actually, no. As MJ indicated they are worse when it's been rainy for a while, and better when it's been dry for a while. I've been there various times of the year, including the winter and have been eaten alive. It all depends on the rains. It should be the same on Antigua. I'm guessing you were there after it had been rainy for a few days straight.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I'm no crunchy-feely type, but the local (here) organic store has this stuff called neem oil that is a topical, after the fact, dropper (think eyedropper-size) that immediately cuts the itching for all sorts of bug bites.

we get lots of mosquitos, chiggers and what have you up here in summer - always works. did down there too.
