Luggage
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Anyone had problems with lost luggage at San Juan before connecting to another flight? Do you check your luggage all the way through to Culebra or do you get it at San Juan and "re-check" it onto the next flight? (I hope this makes sense!) I feel like everywhere I go my luggage comes 24-48 hours later! I want to try and do everything "right" on this trip to avoid that! Thanks for your help!

You can't check it all the way to Culebra. You'll claim it and re-check it if you're flying to Culebra out of San Juan. We've been going to Culebra for almost 8 years and have never had any problems with lost luggage at the San Juan airport. (Knock Wood!)

1. there's always a delay to allow for luggage retrieval and...

2. you really don't need any more space than a carry-on anyway.

Okay thanks for the help - more questions .... (no scuba gear though! :)
When we get to San Juan and grab our luggage do we have to go back through security again with our luggage for our next flight. (I am trying to see if getting in at 12:10 and flying out at 1:30 is feasible or cutting it too close!)
Thanks!

e-ticket/boarding pass as much as you can. security is more or less the same there (if you have a passport take it, not required, but seems to cut some corners), and there will always be a group of 60+ clueless church-kid or school group idiots in no rush ahead of you at the counter. fortunately a print-out of reservations seems to qualify as boarding docs.

You do have to go back through security. You should have plenty of time. What airline are you flying? Delta, US Air and Northwest (to name a few) use the same terminal as Isla Nena. (I assume you're flying Isla Nena since you're flying to Culebra out of the big airport). American, the major airline serving San Juan, is at another terminal, so it would be a bit of a hike with your luggage to get to Isla Nena's counter.

United and Ted use the same terminal that Isla Nena uses. I didn't think MN Charters was flying anymore.

That is good news about Isla Nena. Odd about MN - they sent me a quote via e-mail and I was going to follow up this week via phone. Any particular reason they weren't flying before????? Hmmmm..... that makes me nervous!

Hmm. . . Well, they have been on again, off again, so maybe they are on again. Maybe MJ knows something more definite. In my opinion, Air Flamenco and Vieques Air Link are the most reliable. They both fly out of Isla Grande Airport (a 15-30 minute taxi ride from the international airport) and are very reliable. Air Flamenco also flies out of the international airport - maybe only one flight a day though.

Here's some "just in case" info for you, so you are prepared and then hopefully it won't happen to you!! We took friends down with us last year for spring break and one of their suitcases did get lost on the way to San Juan (I believe they flew United---sorry!). It took almost 3 days and repeated phone calls to get that bag to Culebra. At one point the airlines told them that everything was taken care of, yes we found your bag and yes, it is on it's way to you in CHICAGO!! They finally had someone take the passenger ferry over and just look around at the ferry dock for someone willing to claim the bag. He also had another bag that wasn't theirs that he really wanted them to claim, but no luck there!

If you have the misfortune of losing luggage, just remember to keep calling, keep calling, keep calling the airline.

BTW, I second Debbie on the airlines. We have always flown Air Flamenco and they have been wonderful. We have used them out of SJU also, and we actually prefer Isla Grande, it's so quiet and peaceful.

Advice on luggage: take carry on. If you can't fit it in the carry on then it's not worth taking. We've always taken carry on bags everywhere we've traveled, even to our European trips. You can find washing machines almost everywhere to do some laundry and besides, you're going to the beach! All you need is your bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, flip flops. Take a collapsible bag or backpack that will double as a beach bag or if you want to bring any souvenirs back. No more lost luggage, you have it with you. It's a great feeling when you bypass all those people waiting for their bags at the carousel and you already have your stuff and are on your way to a great vacation. Happy travels! J

Personally, I would rather take my chances and wait 10 minutes to get my bag, than to waste an hour or more doing laundry on my vacation. Just my preference, of course. Also, carry on isn't realistic if you are traveling with young kids.

Just letting everyone know what to expect if your luggage happens to get lost on the way to SJU.

Some travel advice: Laundry is fun if you're sipping a pina colada with Bacardi rum and chatting with the locals. If you have to pay for your kids' ticket then they can pull their own bags. If you lose a bag, you're going to lose more time trying to track it down than you would hand washing your bathing suit and other unmentionables. Happy travels! J

We always pack our absolute necessities in a carry on, so we aren't losing out on anything if the checked bag is lost. Still wouldn't want to waste my daytime beach hours doing laundry, even if a pina colada is involved, you just can't convince me that doing laundry on vacation would be fun, just like you couldn't convince me to cook on vacation. I do enough at home, I prefer to make it a true vacation, not just a change of location.

Let me guess, you don't have kids??????

I have to go with Jeannie G3. My wife and I are soon going to be on vacation in the Carribean for 16 days (most of it on Culebra). We are each only taking a small carry-on. Me-5 silk shirts and 2 quick-dry nylon shorts, a couple of pair of underwear. I am wearing long pants, socks with sandels and a light jacket on the plane, its cold where we are coming from. We have been coming to the Carribean on vacation for many years. On any island we were on we have never felt like we were under-dressed, especially on Culebra. We use the USPS flat-rate box and mail any items that can't be carried on-plane and mail it to ourselves c/o General Delivery, Culebra, PR 00775. My wife mails nails files, polish, hairspray, etc. Me-my pocket knife, cigar cutter/lighter and various toys. Laundry is not a big deal. An hour every few days beats the hell out of lugging around baggage and worrying about lost luggage. And kids, they need lots less than we adults do. Its vacation-leave the hassles at home. !!!Bon Voyage!!!

I think this is just one of those things that divides people in two groups. The carry-ons and the checked baggage. To me, leaving the hassles at home means checking enough clothes that I can guarantee clean underwear every day and a reasonably clean shirt for dinner. Laundry may not be a big deal to you if you don't do it every day at home, but I go on vacation, in part, to get away from that. We have shipped things down before and it works fine, but we have enough in our carry-ons for the first couple days, so if a bag is lost it's not a big deal. We have done carry on only some trips too, not needing to ship anything down. The kids actually need more, not less, than adults, but their clothes are small enough that they could carry on if needed. If there is ketchup involved in a meal, you can usually safely assume that it will be on a small child's clothes in some way, shape or form. It's the snorkel gear, floaties, toys, etc., that ends up taking space. And even with all the phone calls to the airlines, our friends still didn't spend even close to an hour, total, on the phone.

Different strokes for different folks, huh? To me, I couldn't even imagine taking nail polish, a hair dryer or hair spray on Culebra. Clean underwear for every day of my trip, however, is big for me. Sorry, you just can't convince me otherwise.

I was just trying to point out what would be involved if luggage is lost, so the original poster would be aware. I had not intention of starting a giant debate on whether or not to check your bags.

Well, Beachbound, I greatly admire that you're bringing your 16 children to Culebra, especially considering that they're all under the age of ten. I think that makes a definite difference in luggage, especially if all the kids share your obsession with clean underwear.

I was one of 17 children, and we were lucky to have underwear at all. I think you're spoiling your kids, to be honest.

You know, Debbie, my DH and I still laugh about the first time we went to Culebra and I took make-up!! Good times, good times.

And MJ, back at ya' baby!! The kids (Alex, Keane, Kevin, Lucas, Amanda, Adam, Tommy, Mary, Makayla, Grace, Max, Aidan, Quinn, Lauren, Dean and Molly) all send their love!!! I just tucked them all in bed with their wet hair.

Mort, I am taking your comment on the spoiling to heart. I am sorry to admit that not only have I obsessively gotten them all clean underwear, but they each have their own toothbrushes also. I will enter therapy tomorrow to deal with my problems. Thank you for the intervention!!

Richard, stop by the cart on your next visit. I'm sure we can hook you up with a nice piece of trimmed up palm frond if we can't get an actual luxury like a store bought toothbrush (I don't want Mort having anymore regressive childhood truama memory experiences).

In the meantime, work hard (maybe you need a second job mowing lawns/shoveling snow or delivering newspapers?) One day you WILL have your own toothbrush, don't give up!

I can attest that palm fronds work for just about everything. In fact, the first thing my family always does after arriving in Culebra is make our own underwear out of palm fronds.

Next year we plan to do the same for our snorkel equipment. Our goal is to get to a point where we don't have to carry ANY luggage at all.

That's the spirit! When in Rome do as the romans but you're in Puerto Rico, remember the tainos. Make your underwear from yucca, that's what they did. Although, I've seen some pics of some of you. You'd make some funny looking gringo taino people. Just kidding. To Sue (beachbound), yes I have a 15 year old daughter. She's been traveling with us since she was 3 months old and I do admit, when younger, the bags were endless but, we acquired a sense of freedom as she got older and traveled with less not to mention she was able to manage her own baggage. Trust me, making them responsible for their own things even at a young age is fun for them. I enjoy reading everyone's travel tips and experiences and everyday I learn something new. I look forward to my next adventure on the island. Happy Travels! J

Hi Mort!

I'm sorry I haven't posted, I have been in an intensive shock therapy treatment center to help with my clean under<OW!> sorry, with my obsessions. It is going really well, it is going really well, it is going really well, it is going really well, it is going really well, it is going really well................

Huh? Oh, I am not mad at you at all, the kids were really excited to see their picture posted here. I apologize for any snipiness I may have had in previous posts. As you can see in the picture, I am pregnant again and I can get a little hormonal and cranky. I do appreciate you cropping out my head in the picture so I cannot be identified. I prefer to visit the island incognito.

I actually did meet a gentleman named Sergio in shock therapy and I can guarantee you that he is not angry anymore. He did, however, mention something about coming to see you----tell him I said Hi!

The best prescription is another trip to Culebra. You deserve it after all you went through to have all those kids. It's not easy to get pregnant all those times... It takes tremendous focus and dedication. And more than a little alcohol. A rest is just what you need! You'll be back in the saddle before you know it!

Honestly, at this point we are just thinking of going with numbers. And diapers, no way!! I work on the kids in the womb and they pop out potty trained. I've gotten so good at it that I have been invited to do the Dr. Phil show (at least that's the topic they told me we would be talking about......).

I know you have enviably been living a life fairly removed from the mainstream influence, but I was pretty sure you were around with the rest of us during the Monty Python days MJ. I thought for sure you would be a fan and recognize the quote, my bad. I didn't mean to disturb your morning tea. I refrained from the rest of the verse, not wanting to offend anyone, but with that disclaimer I will try to refresh MJ's memory. It's from "The Meaning of Life":

"Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate."

Please let me know if you have never seen it, I will track down a copy to send to you. Now will you dish on what the names are, I'm fairly curious!

Nope, I've never seen it. I was fairly removed from the mainstream long before I moved here ;) When someone makes a reference like that, friends who know me well will see the *huh* look on my face and say "It's from a movie." Then I don't have to worry about why I'm not laughing and also not ask for an explanation.
And nope, I don't have television either (I will say though, I started Netflix last year and have probably seen more movies since then than in my entire life -I finally decided you CAN read too much!)

M Python's "Meaning of Life" a largely flawed movie with a couple of really great sequences, including what Beachbound refers to.

"fishy fishy fishy fish."

"a most elusive fish"

"wherever DID that fishy go?"

wow that takes me back to junior high.

"better...

"better get a bucket"

actually one of the first uses of a steadicam (I think may have won a tech Oscar).
