Kayaking in Culebra Questions

Author: Eric Higgins (---.coxinet.net) Date:   01-22-04 10:09 I'm trying to plan a March trip to Puerto Rico and Culebra for myself, my wife and our two boys, ages 5 and 8. I would be grateful for any advice, especially regarding the following questions: - How’s the kayaking around the island? Which areas of the island are most suitable to kayaking in relatively calm waters? - My wife and I will have our two young children with us. As they aren’t going to be able to travel far in a kayak on their own, I would want to rent two double kayaks (two people in each). Any recommendations for an outfit I could contact about renting two double kayaks for a few days? - I had in mind that we would try to get accommodations at Tamarind Estates, on the southwest coast of the island. Would this be a good base from which to start some kayak trips? Is it realistic/safe to kayak out to Luis Pena or to Carlos Rosario reef/beach for example? How about kayaking over to the main town for a meal? - If we kayaked from Tamarind Estates over to the west side of the peninsula where the main town is located, is it possible/safe to tie up our kayaks somewhere and walk in to get a bite to eat? - Is there a phosphorescent bay on Culebra that we could kayak in? Any nice mangrove channels to kayak in? Any other suggestions or comments regarding kayaking and snorkeling on Culebra would be much appreciated as well. Thanks very much for your consideration. Talk to Jim Peterson 787-379-1973 to rent tandem sit on tops. We have a tandem Folbot that we bring with. We will be there starting March 6th. We are staying at the Posada La Hamaca- right next to the drawbridge in town. Look us up and we would love to show you around. Louis Pena and Carlos Rosario are trips we do every year. Carlos Rosario would be a great first trip-close and easy. No phosphorescence bay,and the mangroves are off Ensanada Honda bay. Hope to see you, David

Author: mike (---.prtc.net) Date:   01-30-04 10:07 As far as I know, there is a bioluminescent bay around isla Pela, or bahia Almodovar, located on the east end of Culebra. I have kayaked/canoed there at night and it was pretty impressive. Check the moon cycle, because moonlight is what you DO NOT want. Author: Eric Higgins (---.coxinet.net) Date:   01-30-04 13:56 Thanks to David and Mike for the kayaking info. David, Hope you don't mind a loosely related follow-up question. My family and I are used to mosquitoes, since we do a lot of canoeing and camping. However, some things I've read about Culebra suggest that it may be thicker with mosquitoes than I'd want for our big family vacation. My impression was that it's very dry so I was a little surprised. We were thinking of staying in a cottage at the Tamarindo Beach Estates. Since you've done a lot of kayaking around the Carlos Resario and Luis Pena area, I thought you might be able to comment on the level of bugginess we might expect to encounter along the shore there. Although I'm sure we'd be bug free out on the water, my little boys (5 and 8) will spend a lot of time messing around on the shoreline and little beaches around Tamarindo (between Carlos Resario and Melones, across from Luis Pena). I noticed that there's some sort of pond or lagoon just onshore there which seemed like a potential bug maker. We haven't reserved our accomodations yet, so I'm open to any advice. Author: JoeKino (---.sympatico.ca) Date:   02-02-04 08:42 I have seen a lot of negative back and forth about mosquitoes, food supply and restaurent service. 1) Take repellent and use it - you will not have a problem. 2) Grocery stores have everything needed and the quality is quite acceptable but if you need Thai eggplant for that special dish, bring it along. 3) The restaurents are great and the service is generally very adequate, if you need perfectly prompt attention, arrive 10 minutes before the rush. I'm a typically spoiled North American and had a great time figuring out how to stay spoiled. If someone gave poor service I didn't go back during their shift, I always arrived just that little bit early and had a back up plan for each meal. Remember " Open somedays - closed others". I read all the stuff and wonder what is is like living life complaining about everything. Don't worry - be happy.
